A United Nations Day Concert by the Tri-County Symphonic Band
Join us as we kick off our 49th Concert Season with a celebration of the 65th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. Offering music from many different lands, we represent France with Darius Milhaud's "Suite Francaise". This is a five movement piece where the movements are named after French Provinces, the very ones in which the American and Allied armies fought together with the French underground of the liberation of France: Normandy, Brittany, Ile-de-France (of which Paris is the center), Alsace-Lorraine, and Provence (Milhaud's birthplace). "Valdres" (a Norwegian march), "March of the Belgian Paratroopers" and "Leonore" (a Portuguese march) provide a showcase for the variety of marches around the world. Maurice Gardner's "Great Wall of China" and William McCauley's "Canadian Folk Song Fantasy" represent the Asian and North American corners of the globe. Our special guest trumpet soloist is MUC Robert Couto. MUC Couto is a native of New Bedford, MA, a former Tri-County Music Association Scholarship recipient and a current member of the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C. He will be performing Alexander Arutiunian's "Concerto for Trumpet".

A Spring! Concert by the Tri-County Symphonic Band
Location: Fireman Performing Arts Center, Tabor Academy
235 Front Street
Marion, MA 02738
Times: Sunday, March 20, 2011 3pm

On the day of the vernal equinox, the Tri-County Symphonic Band celebrates the arrival of spring with an ecclectic collection of originals works for band. Starting with Steven Bryant's "Bloom", with its ethereal undertones, we move to Ed Huckeby's "When Tears Fell". This piece is based on the 1838-1839 "Trail of Tears" historical trek of the Cherokee Indians from the Eastern United States to their new home in the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). Aaron Copland's "Variation on a Shaker Melody" is the composer's own transcription of a segment from the iconic "Appalachian Spring". "Hounds of Spring" is a composition by the venerable American composer Alfred Reed. This piece encapsulates the vibrant energy of a spring day and the irrepressible enthusiasm of the canine spirit. James Swearingen's "Into the Joy of Spring" is a delightfully descriptive piece in three movements that paints a musical picture of the transition of seasons from the fury of winter into the blossoming joy of springtime. Following many earlier models by composers such as Vivaldi and Glazunov, Philip Sparke has taken the yearly cycle of the seasons to inspire a framework for this four-movement suite entitled "The Seasons". The Tri-County Symphonic Band will play the opening movement, "Spring Sunshine", which exploits the wide range of colors available from the concert band to describe a bright spring morning. Saxophonist Lynn Klock will join the Tri-County Symphonic Band to perform Samuel Hazo's "Saxophone Concerto". This piece was written for Mr. Klock and premiered on June 6, 2008.

The Town of Marion was founded in 1852 and is located in Plymouth County in Southeastern Massachusetts.

The Town was originally named Sippican which was an Indian tribe that once lived there. Instead of keeping the name they chose to change it to Marion in honor of General Francis Marion who was the Revolutionary War hero from South Carolina.

For historical points of interest visit the Marion Arts Center and Natural History Museum among a few others. Residents of the town have stated that Marion has a rare natural beauty and charm.
